Willi Schaefer farms just four hectares in Graach and Wehlen — tiny even by Mosel standards — and Christoph and Andrea Schaefer tend their holdings with obsessive care. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel's most legendary single vineyards: a steep, blue-slate amphitheater in Wehlen, named for the sundial in the vineyard. Only J.J. Prüm, Dr. Loosen, and Markus Molitor belong in the same elite class for this site. A Kabinett from Schaefer is Riesling at the height of its delicacy and precision — lightly off-dry, seemingly effortless, and capable of aging for twenty years or more. The 2023 is already singing.
