The name says it all: "the vines next door" — parcels that sit right alongside the classified appellations of the Northern Rhône, farmed by one of the region's benchmark Syrah houses but sold without the appellation's price tag. This is the entry level of the Cuilleron range, and it drinks like a first-class introduction to what the 50 miles between Vienne and Valence do with Syrah: pure varietal fruit off granite and alluvial soils, no makeup. Vinification is refreshingly old-fashioned — parcel by parcel, indigenous yeasts, partial destemming, about three weeks macerating in open tanks — and the élevage is deliberately light-handed, seven months split half in barrel and half in tank so the fruit stays front and center. The estate has been in Verlieu, a hamlet of Chavanay just south of Condrieu, since 1920, and Yves's son Edgar now runs the winemaking, one of the generation taking over the Northern Rhône's leading names. Drink it young, within three or four years, while the fruit is singing — that's the house's own advice.

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, a gratin of leeks and cream, pork loin with apples, seared scallops, Comté and walnut tart, or a simple plate of charcuterie and cornichons.

Tasting Profile

Dry, medium-bodied and rounded rather than sharp, with a soft stone-fruit and orchard-fruit character. Gentle acidity, a touch of texture across the mid-palate, and a clean, faintly mineral finish. Best served cool but not ice-cold.
