The Schulen vineyard holds 63-year-old Pinot Noir vines—gnarled, low-yielding, and obsessively concentrated. Hanspeter Ziereisen ferments them spontaneously and ages them for 18-22 months in barrique, employing techniques more Burgundian than German. This is the quiet revolt: proving that Markgräflerland's limestone-rich terroir, warm climate, and old-vine intensity can produce Pinot Noir worthy of comparison to fine Burgundy. The wine arrives more complex than young—having aged additional years in bottle before release—with silky tannins, dark cherry, mineral precision, and a characteristic earthiness that speaks to old vines and careful hands. Unfiltered and unforgiving of careless drinking, it demands respect and food, revealing its secrets slowly across the glass. This is Pinot Noir as terroir document, not as fruit candy.

"The 2021 Jaspis Pinot Noir Zipsin comes from 63-year-old vines in the Schulen parcel. The dark ruby-purple colored wine opens with an intense and sweet yet elegant and spicy bouquet of ripe and tart sour cherries intertwined with spicy notes. Pure and refreshing on the palate, this is a silky textured, dense and full-bodied, tart and refreshing Pinot with fine, refreshing tannins generating a straightforward finish. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
