Egon Muller, Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett, 2011

A mature Scharzhofberger Kabinett from Egon Müller, now well past a decade in bottle — which is exactly where these wines get interesting. Müller's Kabinett is defined not by must weight (the legal Prädikat has never been the deciding factor here) but by grapes picked at ripeness and not a moment past it; the result is analytically fruit-sweet yet so low in alcohol it can read almost dry. The estate says these wines age elegantly for ten years and more, with the Scharzhofberg Kabinett in particular developing enormous complexity — this is that promise coming due. The site itself is one of Germany's greatest: worn red and grey slate, heavily weathered in the western part so roots drive deep, with a rising proportion of quartzite adding another dimension, and steady Saar breezes keeping everything fresh. Only the estate's Prädikat wines from the Scharzhofberg and the Wiltinger braune Kupp are allowed to carry a vineyard name on the label, and the family has been at the Scharzhof since Elisabeth Koch married a Napoleonic soldier named Felix Müller in the early 1800s. Six generations later, Egon Müller IV is still working exclusively with Riesling, from the estate's own vines.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Apple blossom, nut oil and sweet herbs on the nose. Supple apricot pit flavor on the palate, with a nice balance of sweetness and acidity. The elegant finish shows persistent slatey minerality. This sumptuous kabinett is one of the finest of the vintage." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

91 points

"As with its 2010 predecessor, accumulated from several lots – in this instance representing picking across a wide range of parcels to achieve material of sufficiently modest must weight and potential levity – the Muller 2011 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett (this year’s sole wine of its Pradikat, and carrying A.P. #2) weighs in at 9.5% alcohol. High-toned mint and wintergreen in the nose as well as delicacy, lift and animation on the palate remind me of this year’s generic Scharzhof bottling. Juicy abundance of fresh apple, pear, and lime are threaded with herbal, floral and stony nuances, culminating in a lusciously sustained, invigoratingly bright and vibrantly animated finish. This should show well through at least 2025." —David Schildknecht

Wine Enthusiast

89 points

"Hints of crushed wet stones lend intense minerality to zesty lemon-lime and floral aromas on the nose. It's just a shade off dry in style, with elegant stone fruit flavors and nervous acidity that ripples on the palate." —Anna Lee C. Iijima

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sweet-and-sour pork or Sichuan mapo tofu, Thai green curry with chicken, smoked trout with horseradish cream, a mature Comté, or roast duck with apple.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and low in alcohol, with aromas of lime, white peach, apple and a slatey, almost saline mineral note, plus the honeyed, kerosene-tinged depth that comes with age. There's real sweetness in the analysis, but bright Saar acidity balances it so completely that it can taste nearly dry. Long, clean, mineral finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
