Egon Müller's Scharzhofberger Kabinett is about as close as German Riesling gets to a reference point, and this 2015 is now a decade on. Müller's view is that the Scharzhofberg Kabinetts in particular develop enormous complexity when they're stored properly. The Scharzhofberg is one of the coolest Riesling vineyards in the region and beyond. It's also one of only two sites (the other is the Wiltinger braune Kupp) whose name the estate puts on a Prädikat label. The house style for Kabinett is fruit with some sweetness carried on very little alcohol, usually 7 to 10 percent, so the wines can taste surprisingly dry. A note on the year: 2015 was good enough on the Scharzhofberg for the estate to make Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, which only happens when noble rot shows up. Müller makes nothing but Riesling, all of it from the estate's own vines, and that single-mindedness is the whole point.

"This sister bottling to the auctioned A.P. #4, harvested the same mid-October day, represents a second fuder from the estate’s sole remaining stand of single-post-trained (Stockkultur) vines, planted in 1958. Müller plans to sell it directly into the trade, probably with an emphasis on restaurants. Bright lime, lusciously ripe white peach, cooling and incisive herbal inflections (mint, lovage, and cress), maritime salinity and wet stone are all announced on the nose, then reconvene on a palpably dense yet alcoholically modest palate. There is a bit more snap, pungency and mineral diversity to this wine’s mouthwatering, vibratory finish than that of the marginally richer and more texturally alluring A.P. #4. What a dream to be able to follow the fruits of these two remarkable fuders!" —David Schildknecht

"The 2015 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett #2 is very clear, deep, intense and complex on the nose, with smoky slate, iron and citrus flavors that come along highly delicate and with a subversive complexity. Mouth-filling, round and lush, but super clear, fresh and salty, this is a gorgeous Kabinett that is full and filigreed at the same time." —Stephan Reinhardt

"This offers mouthfilling rich, fruity flavors of peach, ripe apple and melon that are plushly spiced, with lemon curd notes on the crisp finish."

"Pronounced struck flint and candle wax aromas fade with time and aeration, revealing delicate white blossom and lemon rind notes in this off-dry wine. It's an intensely racy Kabinett with salt-rimmed lime and lemon flavors that dart and dash on the palate. Enjoy now for its radiant youthfulness, but also as it matures over the next decade."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green papaya salad or a mild green curry with chicken, pork belly bao with pickled cucumber, smoked trout with horseradish cream, crab cakes, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saar Kabinett profile: green apple, white peach and lime with a stony, slate-driven edge. Light-bodied and low in alcohol, it balances gentle sweetness with fine, racy acidity, so it feels lively rather than sugary, and it finishes long and mineral. The style is built to age, typically picking up honeyed, petrol-tinged complexity over time.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
