Egon Muller, Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese, 2009

A 2009 Scharzhofberger Spätlese from Egon Müller, now old enough to show what the estate says this wine is built to become: something so elegant it can't really be called either "sweet" or "dry." Müller only uses the Spätlese label for grapes that are emphatically ripe or even overripe. The house always starts that harvest a little later than everyone else, sorting every day and picking the ripest grapes from its best sites as late as it possibly can. What keeps all that ripeness in balance is the vineyard. The Scharzhofberg is one of the coolest Riesling sites on the Saar and beyond. Its vines grow in Saar slate that is heavily weathered on the western side of the hill, so roots can penetrate well, and there's more and more quartzite as you head west. In the cellar the approach is deliberately hands-off, following the late Egon Müller III's belief that wine quality comes 100 percent from the vineyard. Jean-Jacques Koch bought the Scharzhof in 1797, after the church was stripped of the land; before that, the vintners of the monastery of St. Marien ad Martyres had worked the slope. Someone else did the waiting on this one, and we're more than happy to pour the result.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Subdued floral aroma with hints of apricot pit and acacia blossom. The creamy tropical fruit element remains elegant, punctuated by delicate acidity. Juicy, spicy and refreshing on the finish. A stunning spatlese and one the best examples of the vintage!" —Joel B. Payne

Jancis Robinson

"Honey, flowers and herbs on the nose. Wonderful crystalline stuff. Very tightly wound. It seems so clear that this ripeness level suits this site just perfectly. Featherlight yet with masses of interest. The delicate fruit and the sky high acidity seem in perfect balance, even if clearly on a thrilling tightrope. That tightrope analogy seems appropriate for the tightness of the texture too." —Jancis Robinson MW

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork belly with apples; crispy duck with a five-spice glaze; Thai green papaya salad or a mild red curry with prawns; smoked trout with horseradish cream; Alsatian tarte flambée; a wedge of aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saar Spätlese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus with a stony, slate-driven minerality, a light, delicate body and gentle sweetness balanced by vivid cool-climate acidity. The style is built to age and typically gains honeyed, savoury depth over time, finishing long, precise and remarkably fresh.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
