The wine of the house — literally. Cazoga is the lieu-dit where Martin Damm's stone cantina sits, and the parcel that gives the estate its identity. Damm, a former Danish therapist who became one of his country's most respected importers of Burgundy and serious Spain, bought the property and old vines in Amandi (Ribeira Sacra) in 2017 and made his first commercial release in 2019. Old, sometimes ancient, Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera vines on the wild, terraced granite slopes above the Sil and Miño, organically farmed and worked by hand up and down the steps. Whole-cluster instincts, neutral oak elevage, no enologist, no fining or filtering for filtering's sake — pure Atlantic-meets-granite Mencía. Limited production and increasingly hard to find.

"The 2020 Cazoga Cepas Centenarias is 100% Mencía. It delivers ripe black fruit aromas of prune and a touch of herbs, followed by a note of jam. This is indulgent and concentrated, with richness and intensity supported by the old vines. It is less pure than in previous vintages but still powerful." —Joaquín Hidalgo

More about Adega Damm Amandi

Martin Damm brings a Burgundian's eye to Ribeira Sacra: each terraced parcel is bottled on its own and made simply, so the granite and slate do the talking.

Damm spent years as a wine importer in Denmark (and before that worked as a therapist), with harvests alongside Burgundy producers like Grivot and Bize. In 2017 he bought an old stone cantina and a set of old-vine parcels in Amandi, the steep heart of Ribeira Sacra above the river Sil, and spent the next few years rebuilding abandoned terraces before his first vintage in 2019. His vines sit around two villages, Amandi and Doade, on granite and slate slopes pitched as steep as 45 degrees, and some are 80 to more than 100 years old. Everything is farmed organically and by hand, up and down the steps.

Mencía leads, with Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao and Caíño alongside, plus a little Godello and Palomino. Damm ferments with native yeasts in steel, then gives the wines about a year in two- and three-year-old Burgundy barrels, with minimal racking and very low sulfur. Look for site names on the labels, such as Cazoga, Seoane and Clos Ladredo, and expect fresh, savory reds that are more about texture and place than power.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb, Galician octopus, smoked pimenton stews, jamon iberico, slow-cooked pork, Tetilla cheese, mushroom risotto. Anything off the open fire with herbs and salt loves this wine.

Tasting Profile

Wild red cherry, crushed raspberry, dried thyme and crushed stone. Light-bodied but coiled and persistent, with juicy acidity, fine grippy tannins and a long, granitic, savoury finish. Mencia at its most precise.
