Colares is one of the world's most improbable surviving wine regions: a tiny appellation on the Atlantic coast just west of Lisbon where vines grow in pure sand, ungrafted, because phylloxera cannot survive the sandy soils. Adega Viúva Gomes was founded in 1808 and is one of the very last estates keeping the tradition alive, with Diogo Baeta now leading the project. Ramisco is the rare indigenous red — bone-dry, brilliantly acidic, lean, and ageworthy on a near-geologic scale. After fermentation in stainless steel, the 2019 spends years aging in old wood before release. Drinking it is a direct line to a wine tradition that nearly disappeared. A serious bottle for serious wine drinkers.

More about Adega Viuva Gomes

Viúva Gomes has been a fixture in Colares since 1808, one of Portugal's most idiosyncratic coastal regions. Named for Widow Gomes, who founded the estate centuries ago, the winery is now run by father and son José and Diogo Baeta, farming tiny parcels near the sea with complete respect for their organic methods. They work with rare indigenous varieties like Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares, producing wines that speak to terroir over technique. These are genuinely uncommon Portuguese wines from a producer still making wine like it's always been made.
