Adega Viúva Gomes has been keeping Colares alive since 1808 — one of a handful of estates still working the appellation's ungrafted, sand-planted vineyards just inland from the Atlantic. The grape here is Malvasia de Colares, an indigenous white entirely distinct from Italian Malvasias, sourced from a small group of old, own-rooted plots. The result is a white of unmistakable Atlantic character: salt-laced, floral, citrusy, with the kind of mineral cut that only Atlantic-facing sands and centuries-old genetics can deliver. There's quiet depth here, but never weight — this is a wine that rewards attention without demanding it.

More about Adega Viuva Gomes

Viúva Gomes has been a fixture in Colares since 1808, one of Portugal's most idiosyncratic coastal regions. Named for Widow Gomes, who founded the estate centuries ago, the winery is now run by father and son José and Diogo Baeta, farming tiny parcels near the sea with complete respect for their organic methods. They work with rare indigenous varieties like Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares, producing wines that speak to terroir over technique. These are genuinely uncommon Portuguese wines from a producer still making wine like it's always been made.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled sea bass, shrimp with garlic, Portuguese clam dishes (amêijoas à Bulhão Pato), goat cheese salad, or simply oysters on the half shell.

Tasting Profile

Pale straw with a green tint. Quince, lemon pith, white flowers, saline sea spray, and crushed shell. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity, a stony mid-palate, and a long, mineral, distinctly Atlantic finish.
