"The Loire probably wouldn't be the first place you'd look for a full-bodied Chardonnay, but you don't want to miss out on this full and complex bottling from the Côtes de la Charité, a little-known IGP on the Loire-Burgundy border. The Mellot family has been making wine in the Loire for generations, and is best known for its Sancerres. Here it demonstrates that it can ably turn its hand to Chardonnay as well as Sauvignon Blanc, producing a ripe, almost New World in style expression of the white grape, with a generosity of pineapple and tropical fruit, some creaminess from barrel fermentation and lees ageing, but also a focused minerality that gives a clue to its origins."

More about Alphonse Mellot

Along with the domaine Vacheron, Mellot is one of the greatest producers of 'classic' Sancerre: linear, lithe, acid-driven and elegant wines quite different from the powerhouse whites that tend to come from Chavignol. Also like Vacheron, Mellot farms biodynamically and produces a wide range of cuvées, including many site-specific ones, mostly from the areas surrounding the medieval town of Sancerre itself. The style is here supremely elegant, and the top wines have good aging (10+ yrs) potential.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
