Anne and Hervé Sigaut call Les Chatelots the most typical Chambolle-Musigny in their cellar, and it's close enough to home that they can keep an eye on it from their own patio. This Premier Cru sits at the heart of the appellation, facing the valley that shapes the slope, on a gentle incline of mostly hard limestone: poor soil, but full of minerals. The Sigauts' share is just half a hectare of vines averaging about 45 years old. In 2019 the vineyard spent the summer in nonstop sun and repeated heatwaves, so the team went through three weeks before harvest to cut off sun-scorched grapes, then picked only in the mornings, with pickers starting at 7am, to keep the fruit fresh. The result is what the domaine calls a vintage of silky tannins and aromatic elegance, and one that brings out Chambolle's floral side especially well. Behind it is a family estate where Maurice Sigaut bottled the first wines in the 1950s, where most parcels are still plowed by horse, and where the approach to Pinot Noir is as little interference as possible. It's charming now, but it's also worth cellaring.

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots is one of the lower-octane wines in the cellar this year, wafting from the glass with cool fruit tones of raspberries, cherries, peonies and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with vibrant acids, melting tannins and a long, precise finish, this is an especially good cuvée this year and should perform very well with bottle age." —William Kelley

More about Anne et Herve Sigaut

Domaine Anne & Hervé Sigaut runs a seven-hectare estate in Chambolle-Musigny where most parcels are still plowed by horse and many processes align with lunar phases. Hervé and Anne took over in 1990 (fourth generation), practicing organic then biodynamic farming, using 100% destemmed fruit, and capping new oak at 40%. These are Pinots that 'caress rather than clobber'—elegant, mineral, made by people who understand finesse on a molecular level.

Fillet of venison (the domaine's own suggestion); seared duck breast with a cherry or red-wine sauce; roast quail; wild mushroom risotto; coq au vin.

Tasting Profile

Raspberry and violet aromas. Light-bodied and elegant, with a charming, fleshy palate, silky tannins and well-integrated oak. It has the structure to improve in the cellar.
