This is single-vineyard Chenin Blanc from the legendary hill of Breze in Saumur, the same chalky terroir that made Clos Rougeard famous. Arnaud Lambert, one of the Loire's top growers and an organic farmer, makes Midi from his largest holding, 3.5 hectares of south-east-facing vines planted in 1985 on sandy clay over soft tuffeau limestone. Only about 10% sees oak and there's no malolactic fermentation, which keeps the acidity bright and the minerality ringing. (It used to be labeled Clos de Midi, but a road now splits the walled parcel, so it is simply Midi as of 2022.) Serious, terroir-driven white at a fair price.

Arnaud Lambert established his domaine in 2017 through a merger of family vineyard holdings and parcels from Château de Brézé, positioning himself at the heart of Saumur's chalk revolution. The tuffeau limestone of Brézé produces wines of astonishing acidity and mineral structure, and his Crémants, aged long in the bottle, hold their own against classic Champagnes without the pretension. These are Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc wines that prove the Loire's cool-climate precision can punch as hard as anyone in the wine world.
