Azelia's Bricco Fiasco from one of the great modern Barolo vintages, drinking with full authority at fifteen years old. Owned by Luigi Scavino, cousin of Paolo Scavino, this Castiglione Falletto estate sits in the more polished, contemporary-traditionalist camp, having abandoned new oak in favor of large traditional botti while retaining a precise, fruit-forward house style. Bricco Fiasco is the hill the two Scavino estates share, on Castiglione's compact clay-limestone, producing a Barolo of perfume, density, and harmony. The 2010 vintage is universally regarded as one of the modern era's benchmarks, marrying classical structure with ripe fruit and long aging potential. Fifteen years in, this is drinking in its prime with substantial cellar potential remaining.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"Azelia's 2010 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is incredibly polished in this vintage. Dried roses, crushed berries, tobacco, mint and spices are woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable class and elegance. The ferrous notes and massive tannins typical of this Barolo are nearly completely covered with layers of deeply expressive, perfumed nuances that captivate all the senses. This is a super-classic feeling Bricco Fiasco from Azelia. I never thought I would describe a Bricco Fiasco Barolo as seductive, but Azelia's 2010 is that, and a lot more." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"Based in Castiglione Falletto, Bricco Fiasco is Azelia's historic cru parcel. Vines planted here exceed 65 years in age. Yields are naturally low, and fruit concentration is very evident as a result. The 2010 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a gorgeous wine with supple and rich textural finesse that glides smoothly over the palate, leaving no rough edges or hardness. Instead, the wine shows impeccable integration both on the nose and in the mouth. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit, licorice, smoke, spice and tar. This Barolo is aged in barrique, of which 20% is new and 80% is neutral." —Monica Larner

More about Azelia

Azelia is a small family winery founded in 1920 in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo, now in its fifth generation with Luigi leading the way alongside his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo. They work 16 hectares (75% Nebbiolo) with obsessive low-yield farming and zero vine replacement until natural end-of-life. Their 'normale' Barolo undergoes a punishing 50+ day maceration and ages entirely in large casks—modern in intent but classical in execution.
