The second wine of Chateau Haut-Brion from one of Bordeaux's great modern vintages, now twenty-six years old and ready to pour tonight. Bahans draws on the same vineyard as the grand vin: deep Gunzian gravel, more than three metres of it in places, over clay and sand in Pessac, where the heat those stones hold and the city that has grown up around the property make it one of the earliest-ripening addresses in Bordeaux. It is the usual Pessac blend of Merlot and the two Cabernets, and the label itself is now a piece of history, since from the 2007 vintage the wine was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion. The 2000 was ripe and classically proportioned from the start, and at this age the smoke-and-gravel signature of the address has fully emerged. Decant it and drink it over the next few years rather than cellaring further.

Robert Parker

"The 2000 Bahans Haut-Brion is fully mature, but I had indicated that back in 2003, giving it an anticipated maturity date of 2005-2016. Its smoky, soft berry fruit and notes of fresh porcini mushrooms intermixed with cigar tobacco and black currants are complex. This complexity is followed by a fleshy, elegant, silky wine to drink over the next 5-6 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Bahans Haut-Brion

Bahans Haut-Brion is a more affordable way into one of Bordeaux's five First Growths: it is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, grown in the same vineyard. It also has a fixed place in history, because from the 2007 vintage the wine was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, in honor of Clarence Dillon, the American banker who bought the estate in 1935. Every bottle labeled Bahans is therefore a 2006 or older, which makes it a natural fit for anyone looking for mature claret.

Haut-Brion itself goes back to 1525 and the Pontac family, and in 1855 it was the only Graves estate ranked among the original First Growths. The vines sit on deep gravel in Pessac and Talence, now surrounded by the suburbs of Bordeaux. The name Bahans comes from a former château, and the family who owned it, whose land was folded into the vineyard.

The wine is built from younger vines and lots not chosen for the grand vin, blended from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in proportions that shift with the vintage. Expect the smoky, gravelly character of Haut-Brion in a slightly more forward frame, and decant older bottles before serving.
