Beaucastel's flagship — a tribute to the family patriarch in a blockbuster vintage. Hommage à Jacques Perrin honors the father (passed 1978) who set the modern course of Châteauneuf's most storied estate. Made only in great vintages from the oldest plots, the cuvée flips the standard Beaucastel script: where the estate red leans on Grenache, Hommage is roughly 75% Mourvèdre — drawn from ancient bush vines on the appellation's classic galets-and-clay-limestone terroir — rounded out with Grenache, Counoise and a touch of Syrah. The 2017 vintage was hot and dry, and Mourvèdre thrived in it. Picked at the start of October, the wine is saturated, structured and built for the very long haul: dark fruit, garrigue, charcuterie, graphite, and a tannic spine made to age. Drinking window opens roughly now and runs decades.

"The 2017 has great ripeness, but not overripeness, and impressive purity. The Mourvèdre is strongly present, to the fore but well balanced with the other varieties. A little dark chocolate is perceptible but very much on the fruit at time of tasting. The elements sit somewhat apart at the moment, but all in good balance. Restrained and orderly, it has weight but not heaviness. Tannins are dense, a little gruff, textural. Good length, gently tapers on the finish. The alcohol is slightly warming on the finish but this has real depth and great potential. Certainly warmer and riper than the 2016. Drinking Window 2026 - 2042." —Matt Walls

The estate's standard bottling is a textbook example of the region's power and balance; its offering from the difficult 2017 vintage is defined by pure, supple fruit. The history of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is now well known in the wine trade. It has over a millennia of wine making lineage and of course the deep connections to Catholicism and the Papacy. French wine experts will also point out that it was the first organized Appellation or AOC in France in 1923. But despite the history and prestige it was only in the last few decades that the wines of Chateauneuf became popular and highly regarded here in the U.S.

The reasons for the quick rise of CDP in the States are numerous, but the ascendency of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate in the late 1980's and early '90s coupled with his close relationship and admiration of the Perrin Family and their famous Chateau de Beaucastel is a top contender.

Indeed the wines of Beaucastel must be given ample credit for Chateauneuf's global popularity. The Perrin family has, through hard work and smart investment, become one of the largest vineyard owning and wine producing families in France. But their flagship and original property is that of Beaucastel.

The wines produced at this Chateau epitomize "classic" Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The property is relatively large but all the vines have been farmed organically for over 50 years. The geology is classic galets (river stones) over sand, clay and limestone. The winemaking is also classic with a combination of oak and cement fermentation followed by extended aging in barrels before bottling.

The results are wines that are both powerful and rich yet balanced perfectly with structure and acidity. They age very well. The combination of fruit, weight and texture makes them recognizable to California wine lovers (another reason for CDP's popularity) yet they have gamey, savory undertones that make them unique and exotic.
