Volcanic Sicilian Pinot Noir, if you'll allow the analogy — bright, savory, and built for the table. Benanti is one of Etna's most respected estates: Giuseppe Benanti put modern Etna on the world wine map in the late 1980s, and sons Antonio and Salvino now run the property. The estate Etna Rosso is the appellation-level entry to the range — Nerello Mascalese with a small portion of Nerello Cappuccio from volcanic soils rich in ash and minerals, fermented with native yeasts and aged in a mix of stainless steel and used French oak to preserve freshness. 2023 was a long, moderate vintage that allowed slow, even ripening and excellent aromatic development. Vibrant, food-friendly Etna at the price-to-pleasure sweet spot of the appellation.

Once viewed as an obscure island, Sicily is now considered one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy. The movement is mostly centered around Mt. Etna -- with its volcanic soils, local grape varieties, and ancient high-altitude vineyards (depicted above) -- and there is no question that Benanti's is one of the most important wineries in the region.
