A grandfather tribute from one of Châteauneuf's most enduring family estates, now 21 years on. Bosquet des Papes has been in Boiron family hands for five generations, and Nicolas Boiron makes À la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père from the oldest Grenache vines on the property — gnarled bush vines in the La Gardiole lieu-dit, blended with a whisper of Cinsault and Clairette and raised in a mix of tank, foudre, and demi-muid. The 2004 vintage was a solid, classically proportioned Châteauneuf year, and two decades of cellar time have done their work. Primary fruit has long since given way to leather, dried herbs, garrigue, kirsch, and the sweet earth notes that define mature southern Rhône Grenache. Drink now, with food — this is a wine at its mature peak, not one to keep waiting.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Deep red. Very ripe on the nose, with powerful aromas of kirsch, boysenberry and raspberry jam accented by licorice and lavender. Lush and velvety, with intense dark berry flavors supported by supple tannins and lifted by a kick of bright acidity on the back. Finishes sweet but focused, and impressively long. Offers a terrific blend of sweetness and precision." —Josh Raynolds

"Almost all Grenache (98%), the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape a la Gloire de Mon Grand-Pere comes from the Gardiole lieu-dit and was aged 12-18 months in concrete tank, foudre and demi-muids. Sweeter and more feminine in style compared to the traditional cuvee, it offers loads of baking spices, cinnamon, dried garrigue and sweet Grenache fruit to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple and pure profile on the palate. Rich (especially in the vintage) and nicely balanced, it’s a joy to drink and makes the most of the vintage. Enjoy it over the coming couple of years as well." —Jeb Dunnuck

Wine Spectator

"Round and fleshy, with ripe but understated plum and red currant fruit that gains intensity through the herb- and mineral-tinged finish. Shows length, balance and definition without going for power. Nicely done."

More about Bosquet des Papes

The Boiron family has owned this Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate since it was established in 1860, and they're now in their sixth generation of winemaking. Their 32 hectares produce Grenache-based Châteauneuf that's traditional, mature, and properly aged in old foudres and demi-muids. These are wines made with respect for method and time, not shortcuts. The family's commitment to tradition means the wines evolve beautifully in the bottle, rewarding patience with genuine complexity.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mature Grenache calls for braised, herb-driven Provençal fare: daube of beef, lamb shoulder with rosemary and olives, cassoulet, wild mushroom risotto, roast game birds, or aged Mimolette and Comté.

Tasting Profile

Fully resolved southern Rhône — leather, kirsch, dried lavender, garrigue, sweet earth, and tobacco. Medium-plus body, soft tannins fully integrated, gentle acidity, long savory finish with that mature Grenache sweetness.
