One of Burgundy's great monopoles, now thirty-five years old: 3.92 hectares inside Beaune's premier cru Les Greves, owned outright by Bouchard Pere et Fils since they bought it in the national assets sale of 1791. The name comes from a Carmelite nun, Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement, who prophesied the birth of Louis XIV — when the future Sun King arrived, the sisters' best vineyard became the Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus. The site sits at 230 to 250 metres on a gentle east/southeast slope of gravelly, limestone-studded clay over shallow bedrock, which is why the wine has always leaned toward silk and perfume rather than muscle. 1990 was a warm, dry vintage that gave ripe, concentrated reds with the structure to go the distance, and a Beaune premier cru from that year is fully mature today — this is a bottle to open, not to keep. Stand it upright for a day and decant gently off the sediment.
