The Riesling counterpart to Bründlmayer's beloved Terrassen Grüner, and just as smart a way to taste one of Austria's great estates without paying single-vineyard money. The fruit comes from terraced vineyards in the estate's best Kamptal sites, including Steinmassl, Steinberg and young vines in Heiligenstein. The blend is the point. The higher terraces are stony primary rock and give cool, mineral, age-worthy fruit. The lower terraces sit partly on fertile loess, ripen earlier and add a little flesh, and the producer says putting the two together gives freshness, finesse and "a certain vigor." There's a natural cooling system too: warm days ripen the grapes, then at night the valley pulls cool air down from the Waldviertel to the north. The wine is certified organic, picked by hand, pressed gently as whole clusters, fermented in stainless steel and left on its fine lees until bottling. It's dry, a modest 12% alcohol and under screw cap, which makes it exactly the sort of bottle worth keeping a few of in the fridge.

The estate is always pushing the boundaries of what one could expect from their vines and with great effect.

Pan-fried trout with lemon and herbs, oysters or steamed mussels, Vietnamese summer rolls, Thai green papaya salad, Wiener schnitzel or pork schnitzel, roast chicken with tarragon. Serve at 8–10°C.

Tasting Profile

Dry. Aromas of white flowers (elderflower, jasmine) and stone fruit with a twist of citrus peel, then spice, minerals and a light yeasty note. The palate is fresh and juicy with white peach, a crisp backbone of acidity and a slim, light-bodied feel.
