Le Rocche del Falletto is Bruno Giacosa's grand single-vineyard Barolo, a parcel of the oldest vines in the Falletto cru that he vinified and bottled separately for good reason. The site is a steep, southwest-facing amphitheater of calcareous clay in Serralunga d'Alba, which Giacosa considered the best ground in Barolo for elegant, long-lived wine. It sees 32 months in large French oak botti, the traditional way, with no flashy new wood. The 2003 came from one of Europe's hottest, driest summers, so expect a riper, more powerful and opulent style than a cool classic vintage, now fully mature after two decades in bottle. It's drinking beautifully today; decant it and give it a little air.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2003 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto has quite a bit more breadth and volume than the straight Barolo Falletto, but at the same time the intense, forward personality of the year is more evident. The classic Giacosa perfume struggles to emerge, but the ripeness of the vintage remains very much in evidence. The tannins are a bit firm, but they will only intensify as the fruit fades, so the 2003 is best enjoyed before that sets in." —Antonio Galloni

"A little jammy on the nose, with lots of strawberry. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish. Slightly one-dimensional now, but should develop wonderfully over time. Best after 2010."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.
