The classical vintage of one of Barolo's most exciting young estates. Alberto Burzi runs a roughly seven-hectare property in La Morra, taken over from his family in 2012 and reshaped around traditional winemaking — long submerged-cap fermentation, then 24 months of elevage in large Austrian oak botte. The Capalot Vecchie Viti is sourced from old plantings of Nebbiolo (approximately 80 years old) in the Capalot MGA, and 2016 is the vintage everyone wants: cool, structured, ageworthy, the benchmark Piedmont year of the modern era. Less flashy than 2017, more vertical — the kind of Barolo you cellar and forget for a decade. Slim production, devoted audience, and one of the most rewarding sub-radar names in La Morra right now.

Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, kirsch, sweet red cherry and sweet pipe tobacco give the Capalot striking aromatic nuance and a real sense of exoticism that is quite inviting. Medium in body and constantly changing in the glass, the Capalot captures all of the complexities that make Nebbiolo and Barolo so fascinating.
