The classical vintage of one of Barolo's most exciting young estates. Alberto Burzi runs a roughly seven-hectare property in La Morra, taken over from his family in 2012 and reshaped around traditional winemaking — long submerged-cap fermentation, then 24 months of elevage in large Austrian oak botte. The Capalot Vecchie Viti is sourced from old plantings of Nebbiolo (approximately 80 years old) in the Capalot MGA, and 2016 is the vintage everyone wants: cool, structured, ageworthy, the benchmark Piedmont year of the modern era. Less flashy than 2017, more vertical — the kind of Barolo you cellar and forget for a decade. Slim production, devoted audience, and one of the most rewarding sub-radar names in La Morra right now.

"The 2016 Barolo Capalot Vecchie Viti is dark, beguiling and very pretty. Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, kirsch, sweet red cherry and sweet pipe tobacco give the Capalot striking aromatic nuance and a real sense of exoticism that is quite inviting. Medium in body and constantly changing in the glass, the Capalot captures all of the complexities that make Nebbiolo and Barolo so fascinating. The tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty to look forward to once that happens." —Antonio Galloni

More about Burzi

There is a thrilling energy in Barolo right now. A new wave of young growers is taking over historic family plots, blending deep respect for tradition with fresh, modern precision. It is truly a fabulous time to drink and collect Barolo. Today, we present an emerging star that is a prime example of why this is: the brother-and-sister team of Alberto and Caterina Burzi.

The Burzi family’s roots in the Langhe run deep: their grandfather Luigi was actually a founding member of the Terre del Barolo co-op in 1960. For decades, the family simply rented their prime La Morra vineyards to established legends like Roberto Voerzio. But in 2012, Alberto officially took the reins, applying rigorous organic and biodynamic farming to reclaim the family's terroir.

The crown jewel of their holdings is those 80 year old vines in the Capalot cru. Planted at high elevation with the rare, small-berried Michet clone of Nebbiolo. Alberto leans heavily into tradition here, utilizing old-school submerged-cap macerations that can last up to 50 days before aging the wine in large, untoasted Austrian oak casks and concrete. This patient, intense extraction results in wines of staggering aromatic complexity and persistent, deeply structured finishes.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pure Langa: brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin, tajarin with butter and white truffle in season, aged Castelmagno, roasted pheasant, or osso buco. A wine that wants long-cooked richness.

Tasting Profile

Cool, structured, classical. Wild rose, sour cherry, dried herbs, tar and licorice over crystalline acidity and chalky, focused tannin. Length and lift in equal measure — a coiled, patient Barolo built to keep evolving.
