If Cascina delle Rose's Barbarescos are the Chambolle-Musignys of the Langhe (aromatic, elegant, resolutely traditional), Rio Sordo is the one with a bit more muscle: more structure, an earthier side, and the broader frame that comes from a vineyard amphitheatre facing further west. The family estate sits right on the crest of the cru, and this wine comes from two small plots there, facing south-west at 310 metres and always picked by hand. Under the vines is marine marl from the Tertiary era, bluish and compact, with about a metre of topsoil on top. That topsoil gives these vines more vigour than their neighbours in Tre Stelle, which grow almost straight into limestone. Giovanna Rizzolio founded the winery and kept chemicals out of the vineyard and cellar in the 1990s, when hardly anyone did. Her sons Riccardo and Davide Sobrino have run it since 2017, and the approach hasn't changed: organic farming, a gentle press that throws out whole stalks without crushing the seeds, and ageing in large, neutral Slavonian casks. The estate makes only about 30,000 bottles a year, so this is small-grower Barbaresco in the truest sense.

More about Cascina delle Rose

Barbaresco, to a much greater extent than Barolo, is home to many small, family-owned producers who fly under the radar due to their size. Cascina delle Rose is one of them, with just three hectares of land dedicated to vines.

They make traditional, highly aromatic and decidedly elegant Barbarescos that are often described as feminine. Comparisons with Chambolle Musigny are apt. The farming is organic and the wine-making is straightforward and hands off. Aging is entirely in large, neutral Slavonian casks.

They release just two Barbarescos, and both are single Crus. They are the only producer to release a Tre Stelle single vineyard, and the wine from that Cru is always focused, floral, raspberry-tinged, and very much on the drinkable side of Barbaresco. The Rio Sordo is a little more beastly, with more structure and an earthy side.

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo or slow-braised beef cheeks; agnolotti del plin in roast-meat jus; tajarin with ragù; porcini risotto; roast duck with mushrooms; aged Castelmagno or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic traditional Barbaresco: red cherry, dried flowers and herbs, with an earthy, savoury edge and no new-oak gloss, thanks to ageing in large neutral casks. Rio Sordo typically shows a broader, more muscular frame, with firm Nebbiolo tannins and bright acidity leading to a long, dry finish. Think red Burgundy with more grip.
