In 1966, David Lett planted the first Pinot and Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley—and some of those original Chardonnay vines are still going. This is the fruit of that founding block in the Dundee Hills, among the oldest Chardonnay in Oregon, now farmed by David's son Jason. Everything here is restrained and low-intervention: native yeast, a whisper of oak, nothing to get between you and the site. The wine is patient and slow-building, the kind that rewards a little air and a lot of attention. Old-vine Oregon Chardonnay from the vineyard that started it all—this is living history in a glass.

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2017 Chardonnay Original Vines has an incredibly alluring perfume, exploding with lemon drop, salted almonds, exotic spices and honeyed undertones. The medium-bodied palate is satiny with pure, intense flavors and addicting juicy acidity, and it finishes very long and mineral-driven. It's stunning now but will age well in the cellar." —Erin Brooks

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"As the label indicates, some of these vines date back half a century. The layered flavors of kiwi, apple and pear fruit are accented with scents and hints of mint and bubblegum. The long, detailed finish brings a touch of bitter lemon rind. As with so many of Eyrie's white and red wines, the aging potential on this is well beyond average. Drink now and over the next decade." —Paul Gregutt

More about Eyrie

David Lett came to Oregon in 1965 to plant Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley, against his professors' advice, and released Eyrie's first vintage in 1970. He and his wife Diana also made the first Pinot Gris in the United States. His 1975 Reserve placed in the top ten at the 1979 Wine Olympics, then came second, by two-tenths of a point, to a 1959 Burgundy in Robert Drouhin's rematch. Their son Jason now carries on the vision that put Oregon on the Pinot map.
