More about Chartreuse

In 1605 the Carthusian monks near Paris were given an alchemical manuscript for an 'elixir of long life.' The recipe calls for 130 herbs, plants and flowers, and to this day only two monks at the Grande Chartreuse know it. Green Chartreuse, developed in 1840, is the benchmark herbal liqueur: intense, complex, utterly unique. It is still made by the order, now at their Aiguenoire distillery in the French Alps.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Chilled and neat as a digestif, or poured over crushed ice. Essential in a Last Word, a Chartreuse Swizzle and a Bijou. After dinner, pair with dark chocolate, mint ice cream, or a pistachio tart.

Tasting Profile

A wall of herbs: mint, anise, pine and wild greens, with real sweetness underneath and a high-proof core. Full-bodied and oily, intensely aromatic, with a long, cooling, peppery finish.
