More about Chartreuse

In 1605 the Carthusian monks near Paris were given an alchemical manuscript for an 'elixir of long life.' The recipe calls for 130 herbs, plants and flowers, and to this day only two monks at the Grande Chartreuse know it. Green Chartreuse, developed in 1840, is the benchmark herbal liqueur: intense, complex, utterly unique. It is still made by the order, now at their Aiguenoire distillery in the French Alps.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Neat and chilled after dinner, or long over ice with tonic. It softens and sweetens cocktails: try an Alaska or a Yellow Bird. At the table, lemon tart, honey cake, or fresh goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Honey, saffron, dried herbs and citrus. Rounder and gentler than the green, with milder heat, the herbal bitterness kept in the background, and a warm, honeyed finish.
