Third Growth Haut-Médoc—the highest-rated property in that appellation from the 1855 classification. The Frey family purchased La Lagune in 2000, making this their first vintage. And what a vintage: 2000 is called a "millésime du siècle," the first year since 1990 considered perfect for both Left and Right Banks. When George Brunet bought the estate in 1958, only 5 hectares remained (frost and war had devastated it); the Freys have continued the restoration. Now fully mature: black cherry, cedar, forest floor. A Third Growth from a legendary year, drinking beautifully.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2000 La Lagune was the first vintage to use a sorting table. It has a clean and expressive bouquet with redcurrant jam and raspberry preserved mixed with gravel and tobacco scents, nicely defined if not overly complex. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, tightly wound black fruit tinged with tar and sea salt, leading to a structured and rather “square-jawed” finish that would have benefitted from more flesh. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château." —Neal Martin

More about Chateau La Lagune

Caroline Frey runs one of Haut-Médoc's classified growths with the same careful vision she brings to Paul Jaboulet Aîné up north. This Third Growth sits isolated at the northern edge of the Médoc plateau, and in her hands, La Lagune has found a new equilibrium—graceful, precise, and wonderfully drinkable at its release.
