The Pündericher Marienburg is one of the Mosel's great vineyard sites—a VDP Grosse Lage spanning an entire hillside with a volcanic geological foundation hundreds of millions of years old. Clemens Busch has farmed this land biodynamically since 2005, continuing organic practices he began in 1984, making him a pioneer of sustainable viticulture in Germany. This Kabinett comes from cooler sites higher up the slope, where three colors of slate—blue, red, and grey—create wines of remarkable mineral complexity. The style is classic off-dry Mosel: delicate, playful, with bright citrus and green apple notes balanced by just enough residual sugar to soften the electric acidity. At around 8% alcohol, it's wine for contemplation or the table—equally at home with spicy Asian cuisine or enjoyed on its own.

"The 2024 Pündericher Marienburg Alte Reben Kabinett results from a barrel selection of the best Kabinetts. Johannes Busch explains that the name Alte Reben was chosen since all the vines qualify for this attribute anyway. Exquisitely aromatic citrus peel and overtones of conifer almost give this an air of the original eau de Cologne. Superb scent development outlines delicious peach framed by tangerine and lime. It bounces, bends and dances, all with accomplished ease and boundless energy. Concentration, verve, tautness and joy are abundant in the 2024. What a glorious, light-footed, wonderful Kabinett. It is simply incredible."

More about Clemens Busch

Clemens, the 5th of his name, along with wife Rita, are stalwarts of biodynamics and natural wine making, a rarity in the Mosel. Situated on the diving line between the middle and lower Mosel, they've single handedly regained recognition for their home vineyard, Marienberg.

The Marienberg was collateral damage of German bureaucracy in 1971. It's 23 hectares were expanded to include 91 hectares and its reputation quickly faded. Clemens and Rita have spent a lifetime teasing out the once recognized parcels and applying their lost names. Red, grey and blue slate snake through the vineyard. Each bottle, besides being a single vineyard, is further divided by slate type with a corresponding capsule to indicate which color it was grown on.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
