Le Clos du Caillou sits completely surrounded by Chateauneuf vineyards—excluded from the appellation only because armed caretakers turned away surveyors in 1936. The Vacheron family (yes, that Sancerre family) took over in 1996 and farms biodynamically. Sandy soils give silky elegance. This Grenache-dominant blend sees 30% whole clusters, ages in foudre and demi-muid, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. One of the southern Rhone's great values.

More about Clos de Caillou

Clos du Caillou sits in Courthézon at the northern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, its 17-hectare Clos enclosed by a 3-kilometer wall. Claude Pouizin bought it in the 1950s and farmed organically back when that was conviction, not fashion; his daughter Sylvie Vacheron and her children run it now, with certified organic farming and biodynamic work in several plots. The vines are old, the reds age in large foudres and demi-muids, and the wines have a silky finesse most of the neighbors can't touch.
