Chateauneuf-du-Pape quality at Cotes-du-Rhone pricing. Le Clos du Caillou sits completely surrounded by Chateauneuf vineyards—excluded from the appellation only because armed caretakers turned away surveyors in 1936. The Vacheron family (yes, that Sancerre family) took over in 1996 and farms biodynamically. Sandy soils give silky elegance. This Grenache-dominant blend sees 30% whole clusters, ages in foudre and demi-muid, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. One of the southern Rhone's great values.

More about Clos de Caillou

In a region famous for heavy, rustic wines, Clos de Caillou (north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Courthézon) has been farming naturally since the 1950s—certified organic in 2010—with a refreshing lightness of touch. It took guts to farm biodynamically in the Rhône back then—this wasn't trendy, it was conviction. The result? Wines that taste like Châteauneuf but breathe like the future. You get the stone, the herbs, the mineral structure, but there's an electricity to them that most of the neighbors can't touch.
