Clos de la Roilette's Cuvee Tardive is one of Beaujolais' most ageworthy Gamays, and despite the name it's a dry Fleurie, the 'Tardive' refers to its need to age, not a late harvest. Alain Coudert draws it from the estate's oldest vines on heavy clay rich in manganese, which lends grip and Pinot-like seriousness. The 2016 is a fine, classic vintage, and this bottle is just entering its mature, savory window. Drinking well now, with room to develop further.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Lurid magenta. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe boysenberry and black raspberry, along with pungent floral, spice and herb notes. Coats the palate with sweet red/blue fruit, candied violet and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out steadily with aeration. Conveys a suave blend of richness and energy and finishes extremely long and nervy, displaying harmonious tannins and resonating florality." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Fleurie Cuvée Tardive unfurls in the glass with notes of dark cherries, spice and potpourri. On the palate, it's full-bodied, textural and richly structured around fine-grained tannins, with considerable concentration and depth. Though the Cuvée Tardive is more reserved than the regular bottling, it's a lot more giving than the 2017 at this stage." —William Kelley

More about Clos de la Roilette (Coudert)

Alain Coudert inherited a poorly maintained Fleurie vineyard in 1967 and spent five decades proving it could rival Moulin-à-Vent. His vines border Moulin-à-Vent and taste like it—richer, more structured, with clay and mineral manganese rather than pure granite. The Cuvée Tardive is built for aging, but even the regular Fleurie ages beautifully. A generational project completed and handed down.
