Chenin Blanc from a single plot of 33-year-old vines on volcanic rock, made by two people, in quantities that barely leave France. Clos des Brétèches is only a few years old — Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas founded it in 2021 — and it is already one of the most sought-after names in Anjou. Mélanie came to wine after a career teaching PE, apprenticing with Patrick Baudouin, Emmanuel Ogereau and Mark Angeli before starting the estate; Romain spent a decade working in Anjou cellars. Les Belouines is planted on spilite and rhyolite, the silica-rich volcanic rock that defines Anjou Noir and gives these wines their length and salinity. Everything is hand-picked, pressed in a manual vertical press, aged a year on lees in barrel, and bottled with no fining, filtration or additives. Dense and vertical, with the purity these two have very quickly become known for.

More about Clos des Breteches

Clos des Brétèches went from unknown to hard to find in just a few vintages. It's a tiny Anjou estate making dense, salty, vertical Chenin Blanc from the volcanic rock of Anjou Noir.

Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas founded the domaine in 2021, starting with the 1.2-hectare Clos des Brétèches in Grand Bonnezeaux, which they took on under the guidance of Mark Angeli. Both came with serious training. Mélanie worked with Patrick Baudouin and Emmanuel Ogereau and at La Sansonnière alongside Mark and Martial Angeli. Romain worked at Domaine Richou and Terra Vita Vinum. They now farm about 2.6 hectares organically, mostly on spilite and rhyolite, the volcanic soils that give these wines their length and salinity.

The winemaking is simple and careful: hand harvest, a gentle pressing, fermentation in barrel with native yeasts, about a year on the lees, and bottling unfined and unfiltered with little or no sulfur. The cuvées are parcel bottlings, including Les Bélouines, Les Jauges, Les Pélioches and Bois Renault. Each reads the same grape and the same rocks a little differently, and quantities are very small.

Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
