Chenin Blanc from a single plot of 33-year-old vines on volcanic rock, made by two people, in quantities that barely leave France. Clos des Brétèches is only a few years old — Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas founded it in 2021 — and it is already one of the most sought-after names in Anjou. Mélanie came to wine after a career teaching PE, apprenticing with Patrick Baudouin, Emmanuel Ogereau and Mark Angeli before starting the estate; Romain spent a decade working in Anjou cellars. Les Belouines is planted on spilite and rhyolite, the silica-rich volcanic rock that defines Anjou Noir and gives these wines their length and salinity. Everything is hand-picked, pressed in a manual vertical press, aged a year on lees in barrel, and bottled with no fining, filtration or additives. Dense and vertical, with the purity these two have very quickly become known for.
