Traditional, old-school Chateauneuf-du-Pape from a family that has been making it for nearly a century. Clos du Mont-Olivet was founded by Seraphin Sabon in 1932 and is still run by his descendants, the fourth generation now, across a 50-hectare estate. They draw on all of the appellation's permitted grape varieties for a classic, Grenache-led blend made in a long-lived, unflashy style. The 2010 vintage is one of the modern greats in the southern Rhone, structured and concentrated with the balance to age gracefully. Fifteen years on it is hitting its stride; decant before serving.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Dark ruby. Black raspberry and cherry compote on the pungent, intensely perfumed nose. Sappy, palate-staining red and dark berry flavors are impressively deep and braced by tangy acidity. Becomes weightier with aeration, which also brings out a licorice quality. Rich but suave and energetic, with excellent finishing clarity and length." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

93 points

"Much more serious, and a big, structured effort, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape has loads of minerality, pepper and garrigue to go with a core of blackberry-styled fruit. Possessing plenty of ripe tannin, good mid-palate concentration and superb focus on the finish, it will benefit from short-term cellaring and have over two decades of longevity." —Jeb Dunnuck

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb shoulder, daube of beef, grilled sausages, or herb-roasted game. Provencal cooking with thyme and rosemary is a natural fit.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied, with ripe red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, pepper and earth. The 2010 structure has softened; tannins are ripe, the finish long.
