This is Cordero di Montezemolo's one Barolo from off their home hill, and it's the bottle to reach for if you like your Nebbiolo with some grip and earth to it. The family goes back nineteen generations in La Morra, and every other vineyard they farm sits in the Annunziata hamlet there. Enrico VI is the exception: a single estate-owned vineyard of about two hectares in the Villero cru of Castiglione Falletto, one of the most historic hillsides in the Barolo appellation. At 300 metres, on compact, iron-rich, calcareous clay, the site is cooler and less ventilated than the La Morra vineyards. The family calls the result a "masculine" Barolo. Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo came up with the name in the early 1970s to mark two things at once, the purchase of the vineyard in 1965 and the birth of his sixth child, Enrico, in 1959. It's 100% Nebbiolo. If you know the estate through its La Morra bottlings, this is the counterpoint: same family, different hill, different temperament.

Antonio Galloni

"The estate's Barolo Enrico VI, which emerges from the Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, is one of the most beautiful wines I have tasted here in some time. Vivid and layered in the glass, the 2010 is all about polish, silkiness and pure nuance. Sweet, silky tannins support a core of dark red cherries, plums, tobacco, menthol and smoke, all in a textured, layered style that is hugely appealing. The Enrico VI is a wine of significant potential. I can't wait to see how it ages." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2010 Barolo Enrico VI sees fruit sourced from the celebrated Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto. It’s hard not to be enthusiastically impressed by this gorgeous effort. The fruit is stunning and dark with a deep, penetrating level of aromatic intensity that spans from creme de cassis to dried licorice root. In the mouth, it is extraordinarily bright and silky and the seamless finish can be counted in long, delicious minutes. A special nod goes the high energy and vibrant quality of this beautiful Barolo. Drink: 2016-2026." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

"Balance, elegance, fruit and a dense texture are the hallmarks of this red. Cherry, plum, leather and spice flavors prevail as this tightens up on the finish. Well-proportioned and built for the long haul. Best from 2018 through 2035."

"This structured, vibrant Barolo opens with a medley of scents including violet, leather, black cherry, thyme and toast. The palate delivers candied cherry accented with mocha, orange peel and clove alongside brisk acidity and fine tannins. Drink after 2020."

More about Cordero di Montezemolo

Look up at the hill of Monfalletto above La Morra and you'll see it: a huge cedar of Lebanon, planted in 1856 to mark a family wedding and now a symbol of Barolo itself. The vineyards below it have been in the same family's hands since 1340.

The Falletti family held the land for six centuries; in 1941 it passed by inheritance to Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo, who began building a name for its Barolo. Today siblings Elena and Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo run the estate, the nineteenth generation, with more than 50 hectares of certified organic vineyards, many in large contiguous blocks rather than the scattered rows typical of the Langhe.

The heart of the range is Barolo Monfalletto, from the home hill in La Morra's Annunziata district: Nebbiolo of perfume and finesse rather than brawn. Enrico VI comes from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto and is the sturdier, darker wine; Gattera rounds out the Barolo lineup, alongside Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Chardonnay. The house style aims for balance and elegance, wines that drink well young but age beautifully, as mature bottles of Monfalletto and Enrico VI from the 1970s and '80s still show.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, braised beef cheeks with polenta, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, tajarin with butter and shaved truffle, or aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect a sturdy, earthy style of Barolo: dried cherry, violet and tar, plus the prominent menthol note the family associates with this Villero site. Nebbiolo here typically shows a full body, firm, grippy tannins and lively acidity, with a long, savoury finish. Think the muscular side of Barolo rather than the silky one, built to age.
