Ruche is Piedmont's most mysterious grape, and Crivelli is the name that saved it - Marco Crivelli has been the longtime champion and president of the Ruche producers' association, a tiny band convinced this aromatic oddity deserves a place at the table. Grown in just seven villages around Castagnole Monferrato, the family has farmed here since 1860, with son Jonathan now at the helm working ten hectares. They've ditched wood entirely for stainless steel, which keeps Ruche's perfumed, floral character front and center. This is a red that smells like roses and tastes like a secret. If it's offered, you want to spend some time with it.

Marco Maria Crivelli is president of the Ruché producers' association, a tiny group guarding one of Italy's rarest and most delicious aromatic reds. The varietal nearly went extinct in the 1950s; today Crivelli's expression, grown on mineral-rich sand and tufa in Castagnole Monferrato, is considered among the region's best. Floral, spicy, elegant—Ruché is Piedmont's most fascinating obscurity.
