St-Joseph sits across the river from Crozes, and the difference is written in the soil: this is Syrah grown on sandy granite and decomposed granite, which gives it a firmer, more mineral spine than Dard et Ribo's Crozes bottlings. It's the most structured and ageworthy of their reds, still made in the domaine's natural, unextracted, low-sulfur style, so the power comes with lift rather than bulk. Expect savory, peppery Syrah with a granite-driven cut running through the middle. Give it air now or a few years in the cellar; either rewards you.

More about Dard et Ribo

René-Jean Dard and François Ribo met in Beaune wine school in their late teens and started their estate in 1984 in Tain-l'Hermitage. They were making natural wine in the Northern Rhône when everyone thought they were crazy. Seven and a half hectares scattered across seven villages, mostly Crozes-Hermitage, some St-Joseph, a slice of Hermitage. Today, their subtle, refined Syrah is exactly what cool-climate Rhône should be. Pioneering, not fashionable.
