Planted in 1949 in what is now the To Kalon Vineyard, Detert’s East Block is one of the oldest Cabernet Franc sites in California—and one of the most characterful. Farmed by the Detert family for generations and vinified with restraint, the wine is a singular expression of Franc in Napa: powerful, yes, but never flashy.

The 2021 vintage is vivid and impeccably structured. There’s purity of fruit—think black cherry, red plum, and cassis—but also graphite, tobacco, dried herbs, and a cool, savory edge that feels more Right Bank than Valley floor. The tannins are fine but firm, and the acidity keeps everything in elegant motion. It’s a wine that demands—and deserves—time.

This is not Franc as a blending grape. It’s Franc in full voice, from a historic block that speaks softly but carries serious weight. Drink with a long decant now, or cellar it for 15–20 years. For collectors and Cabernet Franc devotees alike, East Block 2021 is the real deal.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2021 Cabernet Franc East Block is a gorgeous, large-scaled wine. Dark fruit, mocha, dried herbs, leather and licorice are beautifully delineated. There's plenty of size, power and structure, but also less oak heaviness. This tastes like To Kalon with the added kick of saline brightness that is such a signature of Franc." —Vinous

Wine Spectator

94 points

"This is dense, offering an understated core of black cherry and black currant preserves laced with alder, hot stone and worn leather nuances along the way. A well-buried tug of iron extends the lengthy finish as the refined structure lets everything echo for a sneakily long time. Best from 2025 through 2040."

More about Detert Family Vineyards

Third-generation growers who went pro in 2000, bringing serious Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from their Oakville vineyard. Limited production means you can't count on these showing up everywhere, but when they do, you get wines with real structure and the kind of balance that speaks to careful work in a premium terroir. These Napa bottles won't break the bank for the quality you're getting.
