One of the grand fine natural wines of Beaujolais, made the old-fashioned way long before that was fashionable. Domaine Chamonard was founded by Joseph Chamonard, a Morgon original who farmed organically and vinified alongside friends Lapierre, Foillard, Breton, and Thevenet; today it's run by his daughter Genevieve and son-in-law Jean-Claude Chanudet. Clos de Lys comes from old massale-selected vines on Morgon's classic granite, fermented whole-cluster with wild yeasts and aged in old wood, no chemicals in or out of the cellar. This is a magnum from 2010, a structured vintage that suited Chamonard's serious, ageworthy style. More than a decade on, it has shed its baby fat and moved into mature, savory territory; decant and enjoy with friends.

More about Domaine Chamonard

One of the original natural wine pioneers in Beaujolais, Jean-Claude Chanudet took over the 18th-century estate in 1989 and transformed it. He's the "enfant terrible" of the region, working small patches of Morgon and legendary Fleurie vines on an outcrop called La Madone. These wines taste like they were made by someone who trusted his vines more than anyone else's opinions.

Mature Gamay: cherry and wild strawberry softened by age into dried-fruit, leather, and earth, with smoky savory depth and gentle, resolved tannins. Drinking now.
