Domaine Charvin makes Chateauneuf-du-Pape the old way, and beautifully. Laurent Charvin farms cool, sandy, north-facing slopes near Mont-Redon at the northwest edge of the appellation, building his red around mostly old-vine Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre and a bit of Vaccarese. The winemaking is gloriously hands-off: long whole-cluster fermentation, 18 to 20 months in concrete with zero oak, then bottled unfiltered, so the wine stays fresh, perfumed and true to its site rather than weighed down. The 2010 is a classic, structured Rhone vintage with a reputation for the long haul, which means this is the bottle to cellar or to decant well ahead if you open it now. A more youthful, age-worthy counterpoint to Charvin's mature releases.

Laurent Charvin represents the sixth generation of his family's Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, and he's done something radical: converted all 28 hectares to organic. Whole-cluster fermentation goes into concrete tanks instead of barrels, letting the fruit speak without oak interference. This is Châteauneuf for people who want generosity without excess.
