One of our favorite sources anywhere for clean, honest, affordable natural wine, and the white is the sleeper of the range. Alain and Agnès Carrère farm 30 certified-organic hectares at around 350 meters in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, in the cool northwestern corner of the Roussillon where clay and limestone take over from the schist nearer the coast — altitude and chalk are why a wine from this latitude tastes this fresh. Macabeu leads, with Rolle (Vermentino) and Chardonnay alongside; it is direct-pressed, fermented on indigenous yeasts, and aged on its lees in concrete, unfined and unfiltered, with a small dose of sulfur only at bottling. The conversion here was guided by neighbor Tom Lubbe of Matassa, whose influence runs all through this corner of the Roussillon. Built for drinking rather than contemplating.

Alain Carrère and his wife Agnès founded this 30-hectare Roussillon estate in 1992, growing Carignan on schist, volcanic stone, and limestone. A meeting with natural wine guru Tom Lubbe sparked a dramatic shift toward natural winemaking and minimal intervention. Today they're everyone's favorite source for incredibly delicious, affordable Roussillon. Organic, unpretentious, alive.

Tasting Profile
