Half Carignan, half Grenache Noir, fermented whole-cluster with a two- or three-day maceration in big concrete vats — this is about as unfussy as red winemaking gets, and it's one of our favorite sources anywhere for clean, honest, affordable natural wine. Alain and Agnès Carrère founded Majas in 1992 and now farm 30 certified-organic hectares entirely within the commune of Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, up in the Fenouillèdes valley of the Eastern Pyrenees at 350 to 400 meters, where the Tramontane keeps things honest. The Carignan comes off vines ranging from young plantings to gnarled 120-year-old survivors — remarkable, given that roughly three-quarters of the region's vines were pulled out in the co-op era and growers like Alain's father were pushed to replant Merlot and Cabernet for "Bordeaux style" bottlings. Alain rebuilt the place with help from Tom Lubbe of Matassa, converting to organics and throwing out the commercial yeasts entirely. The result is a red built for drinking rather than pondering, and priced like one too.

Alain Carrère and his wife Agnès founded this 30-hectare Roussillon estate in 1992, growing Carignan on schist, volcanic stone, and limestone. A meeting with natural wine guru Tom Lubbe sparked a dramatic shift toward natural winemaking and minimal intervention. Perfect Pairings

Grilled merguez, a plate of jambon and cornichons, roast chicken with thyme, lentils with sausage, or a mushroom and onion tart. Casual food, and don't be shy about a slight chill.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-light, with red berry fruit, dried herbs and a stony, savory edge from the Carignan. It's fresh and lifted, with soft tannins, bright acidity and a clean finish.
