While the rest of the Burgundy market races to sell the youngest, tightest vintages, Meix Foulot lets its wines arrive when they're actually ready to drink — and here that means a 2020 red with six years of age already behind it. Agnès de Launay runs this fiercely traditional estate as a true Mercurey specialist: not a single vine outside the village, virtually no new oak, and old, low-yielding parcels on steep limestone. "Les Veleys" is the domaine's most classic premier cru site, southeast-facing and structured, long considered one of the most ageworthy wines of the appellation. 2020 was a warm, generous year, but Mercurey's higher elevation kept it vibrant rather than heavy. This is savory, honest, ready-now red Burgundy at a price the Côte d'Or forgot how to offer.

Agnès de Launay runs this historic estate with a fiercely traditional, terroir-driven philosophy. She is a true Mercurey specialist, without a single vine growing outside the village boundaries. She also uses virtually no new oak, aging the wines in a mix of small barrels and large casks to let the pure, wild character of the region shine through.

The “Veleys” is situated on a steeply sloping, southeast facing vineyard with extremely low yields (averaging 35 hectoliters per hectare). This parcel is divided into four pieces: one part planted in 1983; a second planted in 1964; a third planted in 1957; and the oldest section planted in 1947. In its entirety, “Les Veleys” encompasses 1.5 hectares with annual production of approximately 450 cases. For us, the “Veleys” is the most classic representation of the terroir of Mercurey with strength, persistence and a hint of the “animal”. It is certainly one of the longest-lived of the wines of this appellation. We consistently request that this cuvée be bottled in magnum.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry and raspberry with earthy, faintly gamey undertones and a limestone edge. Medium-bodied and structured, firm but resolving tannins, bright acidity from the altitude, and a savory, persistent finish.
