Filliatreau's Vieilles Vignes is the cuvée that defined modern Saumur-Champigny — the estate's founder, Paul Filliatreau, reshaped the whole appellation's reputation for Cabernet Franc, and this old-vine bottling is the flagship. It comes from mature parcels around the historic hamlet of Chaintres, on shallow soils over the Turonian tuffeau chalk that gives Saumur-Champigny its signature freshness and mineral cut. This is the 2009, a famously warm, ripe Loire vintage that produced fuller, more generous reds than the cooler years — a riper, rounder counterpart to the savory 2005. Now mature, it shows both the plush fruit of the vintage and the secondary, earthy complexity of age. Decant and serve with a hearty meal; it's drinking well and will hold.
