One of Burgundy's most revered Grand Crus, Bonnes Mares shows its full glory in Roumier's hands: a wine of knockout complexity layering blackberry, violet, licorice, and minerals with remarkable poise. The 2006 vintage captured beautifully ripe fruit in a classic year, allowing Roumier's meticulous vineyard work and cellar discipline to shine through superb volume without heaviness. This is classical Burgundy at its most compelling—equal parts power and restraint.

"There is a discreet but not invisible note of herbal tea to the aromas of blue berry, violet, tea, anise, clove, earth and a hint of underbrush. There is fine punch to the rich, full-bodied and still quite serious flavors that are supported by good levels of dry extract on the impressively long finish. This is not an especially big wine by the usual standards of the Roumier Bonnes Mares but I like the refinement and lovely sense of harmony. With that said, it would be fair to say that this is still in the process of shedding its moderately firm tannic spine and for my taste, I would suggest allowing it another 6 to 10 years of cellar time."

"The 2006 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted for a long time, perhaps not since just after bottling. It has a pretty, relatively youthful nose, with vivid morello cherries and crushed strawberries. Inflections of blue fruit become more floral with aeration. It never fully "takes off" like the best of Christophe Roumier's Bonnes-Mares. The palate has a touch of glycerin on the entry and a keen thread of acidity. It's tart in the mouth with the roundness and concentration one seeks in this Grand Cru belatedly appearing on the finish. Very fine, but not spectacular." —Neal Martin

"Pungent incense, and herbal concentrates; ginger and cinnamon; kirsch and framboise distillates, along with their dark flesh-and-juice fresh counterparts, all practically assault the nose from Roumier's 2006 Bonnes Mares. This saturates the palate with sweet ripeness and liqueur-like textural richness, while cherry pit, black pepper, and peat offer counterpoint. A savory carnal undertone adds another intriguing dimension. The concentration and resonance of spices, herbs and fruit in the finish is superb. Here is a Bonnes Mares much more complex and dynamic at this youthful stage than the majority. In fact, I can't see that it would be a crime to drink some young, although it should age well for at least a dozen years." —David Schildknecht

"A touch of a vegetal element to the sweet cherry and woodsy spice flavors and a sinewy texture mark this red. It seems closed down now, with the structure dominating, but there's a smoldering intensity and energy that powers the long aftertaste. Offers both elegance and depth. Be patient."

More about Domaine Georges Roumier

In Chambolle-Musigny, Roumier makes Pinot Noir that reminds you why Burgundy matters. These are reds with silk in their backbone, elegance in their structure, and the kind of complexity that unfolds over time in the glass and in the cellar. The domaine has been selling to the U.S. since the late 1920s through visionary importer Frank Schoonmaker. Sold through the best importers for a reason—this is the Côte de Nuits at its most refined and unforgettable.
