Twenty years on, this is one of Châteauneuf's most singular cuvées at full maturity. La Barroche is a small family estate in CdP run by Julien Barrot, who took the reins in 2002 and has since vaulted the domaine into the top tier of the appellation. PURE is exactly what its name promises — 100% Grenache from the estate's oldest vines (some pushing 120 years), unblended, undiluted, a pure expression of CdP's emblematic grape from a singular site. The 2005 vintage was one of the great Châteauneuf years of the modern era — concentrated, structured, built for the long arc — and two decades in bottle have softened the edges into something silky, complex, and quietly profound. The kind of bottle you open for a serious occasion and remember for years afterward. Drink now through the next decade with full attention.

"(100% grenache) Deep red. Wonderfully sexy strawberry, raspberry, blood orange and floral aromas are downright Burgundian-and great Burgundy at that. Silky and sweet, with deep red berry flavors and an array of floral pastille and mineral qualities carrying through the finish. There are tannins here but they don't appear until very, very late, allowing the seductive fruit to shine. This was as alluring a wine as I tasted on this year's trip." —Josh Raynolds

"A wine I've had many times, Julien's 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a heavenly Chateauneuf du Pape that's a tribute to the heights Grenache can hit when grown in a great terroir and made by a great winemaker. Possessing about as much kirsch liqueur, blackberry, licorice, bouquet garni and spice as you could pack into a wine, this flamboyant, voluptuous and sexy beauty doesn't show any of the harsh tannin common in the vintage, has awesome purity and a blockbuster finish. When a wine is drinking this good, I see no reason to hold off, but I've no doubt it will hold nicely going forward." —Jeb Dunnuck

"Dark and brooding, with Turkish coffee and licorice root notes leading the way for bittersweet cocoa, mesquite and fig. The long, plush finish shows flashes of incense, as fruit and chestnut notes linger."

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine of occasion — slow-roasted leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, braised short ribs, wild mushroom risotto with truffle, aged Mimolette, or a serious cheese course featuring Comté and Roquefort.

Tasting Profile

Silky, layered, fully mature — dried cherry, raspberry liqueur, kirsch, garrigue, leather, dried roses, and warm baking spice. The tannins have resolved into velvet, the alcohol fully integrated, the finish endless and quietly powerful.
