La Porte Dorée is the Tessier family's flagship white, and it isn't made every year. When the wine from their oldest vines doesn't measure up, it gets blended away. So it means something that there's a 2023, because in that vintage the domaine skipped three of its other cuvées rather than lower its standards. It's 100% Romorantin from vines averaging 80 to 90 years old on clay over limestone bedrock, farmed organically and picked by hand. The Tessiers call 2023 "mild and generous": a calmer year after a very wet spring, with a four-week harvest that needed heavy sorting. The Romorantins fermented slowly and took their time. The family adds nothing but a little sulfur, so the style is quiet and clean rather than funky. Fair warning: the acidity is firm and the wine can seem severe when young, but it turns honeyed and nutty over a decade or more. If you love Chenin with some backbone, buy this one to lay down.

More about Philippe Tessier

Founded in 1961 by Roger Tessier, now run by his son Philippe, this 23-hectare Cheverny estate sits in a microclimate between the Loire and the forest—cool-growing conditions that push acidity and complexity. Certified organic since 1998, these wines pull Chenin Blanc and reds from terroir that tastes like a place. Philippe believes wine should reflect the season and the man; these wines clearly do. Zev Rovine Selections brings them to America.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pike-perch or trout with beurre blanc; seared scallops; chicken in cream with morels; rillettes with cornichons; Selles-sur-Cher or Valençay goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, built on firm, almost tactile acidity. It can taste tight and severe when young, then develops honeyed, nutty notes over a decade or more in bottle.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
