Dunn's Howell Mountain Cabernet is famously tight in its youth, and this 2013 has now had more than a decade in bottle to unwind. It's hard to picture a more iconic Napa Cabernet. This is the flagship, drawn only from the family's own 42 acres on Howell Mountain, where the vines sit around 1,800 to 2,100 feet. That's well above the fog line, and the thin, shallow soil holds yields to about half of what the valley floor gives. More hours of sun and strong breezes produce thick-skinned berries, and that's where Dunn gets its firm mountain structure. Randy and Lori Dunn bought their first 14 acres here in 1978, and five years later Randy helped define the Howell Mountain AVA. The estate is still family-run, now with a third generation in the cellar. The wine needs 5 to 7 years to hit its stride, so a 2013 is right where you want to start opening it.

More about Dunn Vineyards

Dunn's status as a benchmark Napa producer dates back to 1978, when Randy and Lori Dunn purchased a 14-acre parcel in Angwin on Howell Mountain, planted to five acres of Cabernet. When Howell Mountain became an American Viticultural Area in 1983, Randy was one of the growers leading the way. The estate is still, happily, family-run, now in its third generation as young Alex (Randy's grandson) joins second-generation Kristiana and Mike Dunn. As much as Napa has changed since the '70s, some things haven't, and Dunn remains one of the touchstones of classic Napa.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye off the grill; lamb shoulder rubbed with cumin and coriander; braised short ribs; venison loin with juniper; a wedge of aged cheddar.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Howell Mountain Cabernet profile: dark blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with a savoury, mineral edge and Dunn's signature cumin and coriander spice. It is full-bodied and powerful, with firm, grippy tannins from thick-skinned mountain fruit and fresh acidity, finishing long and dry. Think a sterner, more structured take on Napa Cabernet, built to age.
