Gewürztraminer from the village that gave the grape its name — "Gewürz" for spice, "Traminer" for Tramin — made by the producer widely called the Queen of Gewürztraminer. This is the modern, bone-dry take on a grape that too often turns flabby and sweet: six hours of skin contact for aroma, fermentation in steel at a cool 18°C, then several months on the lees, all of which builds texture without blunting the perfume. The vines sit on limestone-rich slopes of the Dolomites between 350 and 500 meters, with sand and porphyry running through, where warm sunny days and cold mountain evenings keep the aromatics lifted and the acidity intact. 2024 made the growers work for it — a rainy, humid spring and early summer, then heat from mid-July and wide day/night temperature swings from late August that preserved freshness, with a smaller crop as the tradeoff. As the estate's widely available varietal bottling rather than a single-vineyard cru, it's the most approachable way into a house that sets the benchmark for this grape.

Elena Walch was an architect before she became South Tyrol's first independent female winemaker in 1985, and that precision shows in everything she makes. Her 55-hectare estate in Alto Adige includes the iconic 'Beyond the Clouds' blend, a wine that's become synonymous with elegant Italian whites. Perfect Pairings

Thai green curry, Alsatian onion tart, roast pork with apples, smoked trout, or a plate of Taleggio and washed-rind cheeses. Also excellent with spiced Sichuan cold noodles or duck with ginger.

Tasting Profile

Straw yellow with a golden tint. Powerfully aromatic — rose petal, lychee, grapefruit peel and baking spice — but fully dry on the palate, so it smells sweeter than it tastes. Medium-full bodied with a lees-derived roundness, fresh acidity that keeps the exotic fruit in line, and a long, gently spicy finish.
