Gavarini is the Monforte d'Alba hillside the Grasso family farms, and this is its Nebbiolo bottled young. Made as Langhe Nebbiolo rather than Barolo, it sees stainless steel and nothing else — fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and bottled the following spring — so the fruit and the site come through with no oak in the way. The vines average around forty years and sit at 350 to 380 meters on south-facing limestone, and Monforte's signature is Nebbiolo's cherry-and-rose side rather than the tar-and-iron heft you get further east in Serralunga. The Grassos are enlightened traditionalists, known for obsessive farming, very long macerations and large Slavonian casks on the Barolos, and that same attention shows up here in a wine you can open tonight. The most affordable way into one of Piedmont's great addresses.

Kerin O'Keefe

92 points

"Made partly with the estate’s youngest vines registered to Barolo located around the winery, partly with Nebbiolo for Barolo planted in 1974 in the Bricco San Pietro MGA that the firm purchased in 2014 and partly with grapes from a vineyard above Borgo Sant’Anna in Monforte that the family acquired last year, the 2025 Gavarini is linear, bright and loaded with class. Showing great nerve and tension, it delivers sensations of wild raspberry, cherry, star anise, orange zest and tangy mineral notes accompanied by taut, polished tannins. Drink through 2030." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
